Ramallah- AMQF, 14 November 2016

A. M. Qattan Foundation and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre in Ramallah are hosting internationally acclaimed curator Jonathan Watkins in a series of workshops and lectures on the organisation of contemporary art exhibitions. The event is a one-week programme that will take place daily in the Sakakini Centre from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Yazid Anani, Director of the Public Programme at AMQF, noted that this series is an important step in strengthening relationships between cultural institutions in Palestine and their peers from abroad. He added, “We aim to develop the capacities of young artists and culture amateurs so they can be capable of organising art exhibitions from A to Z and of connecting artworks with the earlier stages of artwork production”.

On Tuesday, November 14, at 5:00 pm, Watkins will also give a talk in the Sakakini Center on his experience organising the Iraqi Wing in the Venice Biennale in 2013.

“Throughout this week, we will be building an exhibition featuring the work of 13 artists and art amateurs,” said Watkins. “This will be a good chance for participants to explore and learn about the field. It will also be a chance for me to become acquainted with new ideas, especially with regard to contemporary art in Palestine.”  The said exhibition will be inaugurated in the Sakakini Center this Friday at 5:00 pm and will run for approximately two weeks.

Jonathan Watkins has been the Director of the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, since 1999. He has organised a number of exhibitions in various cities around the world, including Sydney, Beijing, Sharjah and Milan. He has authored many publications and articles on contemporary art.
