Despite of the siege: we sing and dance

Home In Qattan News Despite of the siege: we sing and dance

A very busy autumn saw the launch of the Gaza Music School's first teaching programmes (see above) culminating in a concert in mid-December at the Qattan Centre for the Child attended by over 500 people. Discussions were also started with the UK's Department of Culture, Media and Sport to develop a UK-Palestine Film Coproduction Treaty that will bring great technical and financial benefit to filmmakers in both countries. The Palestinian Ministry of Culture appointed the Foundation as its principal negotiator on this matter. At the request of the Royal Jordanian Film Commission, we have begun developing a School Film Education Programme for Jordanian schools along the same lines as the very successful version we implemented in Palestine. This should launch in April 2009. Internally, a long process of preparation for the strategic planning session in Amman in December produced a fascinating few days of heated and passionate discussion between colleagues. Work is now under way to finalise our new five year strategic plan, although delays are expected because of the situation in Gaza. Finally, our 2007-08 annual report was published in November and is available for download hereOther major events included the opening of the new Freedom Theatre in Jenin and the commissioning of a biography of Haidar Abdel-Shafi by Zakaria Mohamed.
