On 6 June, dozens of science researchers, teachers and students watched the phenomenon of the transit of Venus in front of the sun during a viewing event organised by the Centre’s “Walid and Helen Kattan Science Education Project”. The watch took place in Al-Taibeh village in Ramallah Governorate, Al-Taybeh village in Jenin Governorate and Jerusalem. This is a rare astronomical phenomena, repeated on a cycle spanning 243 years, during which it is observable twice at 8 year intervals, another time after a 121.5 year interval, and fourth after 105.5 years. The next passing of Venus in front of the sun will not occur until December 2117. The viewing event included two days of camping in Al-Taybeh in Jenin with a group of 5th and 6th grade students and their teacher, Abdullah Qabaha, from a basic school in Jenin. Meanwhile, a group of female 7th and 11th grade students from a secondary school, supervised by their teacher Karimeh Awadallah, coordinated the viewing activity in Ramallah. In Jerusalem, a group of students watched the phenomenon with a group of child patients from a local hospital. Click here for photos of the activity, and here to watch Palestine TV's report
