The Culture and Arts programme has launched on 19/2 the photography exhibition “Masafer: Life in the Interstice” by Eduardo Soteras Jalil. The exhibition runs until March 3rd in two spaces, the A. M. Qattan Foundation and Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre. Alaa Khanger, a graphic designer has been commissioned to conceptualize the design of the exhibition space and the design of the publication to accompany the exhibition. Both the spatial and publication design are not to act as externalized elements for promotion and publicity of the work, but are intrinsic parts and are extensions of the body of work and research that has been “collected” in the last two years.

Masafer is a photography exhibition that explores the multi layers of a space in its physicality and metaphysicality. Eduardo Soteras, after spending more than a year living in Khirbet At Tuba, one of the cave villages of Masafer Yatta, retreated from the desert to reflect on what the camera he had with him had captured. The spatial “treatment” in Masafer is intricate. Both the images and the exhibition space try to read what is political, historical and spiritual in the desert of Masafer Yatta. How do these three intertwine to produce a particular enclave in what has been addressed as Palestinian identity. Masafer both opens and closes interpretation. It even attempts to offer reflection on passage of time. It is black and white.
The exhibition contains 20 black and white photographic fine prints. The size of prints is 60x90 cm, done in Benda Fine Art Baryta 315 gsm paper and Epson Archival pigment print, in addition to two 110x140 cm prints.
Masafer is planned for a domestic, regional and international tour throughout 2014 - 15. Potential venues and partners include Dar Annadwa (Bethlehem), Al Ma’amal Foundation for Contemporary Art (Jerusalem), Darat Al Funun (Amman), Warsheh (Haifa), Fateh Il Modares (Majdal Shams), Mosaic Rooms (London), and other spaces and institutions in Beirut, Cairo, Spain, Argentina, Germany and Switzerland.
The project is being produced by the A. M. Qattan Foundation, and has received support from the Argentinian Representative Office to the PA (Ramallah), and The Olive Oil Campaign (Switzerland).
