The Child Center-Gaza/AMQF in Gaza organized recently, a literary encounter via Skype between the members of the English Language Club and the Palestinian-American poet and novelist Naomi Shihab Nye.
33 children from inside and outside the club took part in the event, which aimed to introduce participants closely to Nye’s literary experience and familiarize them with her major works, especially her poem Hidden and youth novel Habibi.
The Literary Encounter Program at CCG gives children the chance to read, write and express themselves in English by interacting with writers and inspirational figures from around the world and exploring other cultures.
“It was a special meeting, and we had a lot of fun!” said Sufian Sirdah (13 years) about the encounter. “More importantly, we learned new things and great information. It was a great honor to meet an inspirational person like Naomi.”
Aliya Kassab (15 years), another participant said, “I was very excited to learn more about the poet. I can’t describe how happy I feel after meeting her; it’s the happiest day of my life! I wish to be like her some day.”
Nye expressed her overwhelming joy about the encounter. She commended the children’s maturity and intelligence, specially demonstrated through the questions they asked, which reflected their curiosity and passion for reading.
The meeting was concluded with advice from Nye to the children, “Do not be shy to ask questions – always ask more questions to those older than you and learn from their experience. The curiosity I see in you is very important. Do not stop observing your surroundings. Keep a small notebook with you at all times to write down your observations, thoughts and daily impressions. Writing is an excellent way to understand ourselves and the world around us.”
Naomi Shihab Nye is a Palestinian-American poet, novelist and songwriter based in the USA. She won several literary awards and served many honorary positions, in addition to a number of fellowships. She was elected Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Nye has also published a number of poems and collections of poetry, stories and essays. Her novel Habibi won a number of international awards, and was translated into five languages.
